I agree with everything you say. However I cling to my dial caliper because it's easier to use when machining. You can look at the dial and immediately know how much more you need to go for you finish target. Say you are aiming for .750 and you're at .777. you can see you need .027 more on the dial right away and the digital you have to do the math in your head. It just makes it easier to make a mistake with the digital. However if I but a new one I may go for the digital just to get the trouble free operation. I hate to look at the price of a 12" one though.
