MoparMogSteve has it right if you just want to get the needle to the top(index like factory. Small hard wire does the trick. Normally stick in in along rail on top or back.

With that said, for ANY of you wanting to get a caliper, Do yourself a favor and get a Mitutoyo Digimatic 0 - 6 or 0 - 8 inch caliper. I've used them all and these are by FAR the most durable and accurate. No gears to get grit in to skip teeth and the only one I've seen braek was crushed by a 15 pound block being dropped on it. Battery will last a minimum of 4 years oc normal use.(8 hours on/off shop time a day)
I gave up dails 10 years ago.
