fuel sending unit

I have a 50 B2 FFPW. The fuel sending unit has two wires going to it. On the gauge they are marked G,1,2. By the wiring diagram the G goes to the ignition switch 1,2 to the sending unit. The sending unit is not marked. Will the sending unit or gage get hurt if I hook them up backwards in testing. I have a 50/50 chance to get it right.The truck has been converted to 12 volt. what do I need to do to get this gage to work. I think I read here sometime not to use a ceramic resistor to drop the voltage because it doesn't stop spikes.
