I would check/change the oil.
I've had this problem on trucks where certain brands of oil do not like road trips of this nature and the oil gets too thin to hold pressure at idle. This would be easiest to test to see what the gauge says when the engine first gets up to operating temperature.
Much easier to check then dropping the pan, at least for starters.
