Starter No Starty

Just charged my batteries (24V system), and hooked 'em back up just like I found 'em.

Now I push the starter and when it is supposed to engage, it instead cuts off power from the battery all together. Battery gauge drops to zero.

Then when I let it back up, the battery gauge reads a good charge again.

I picked through the archives a bit but can't find an instance of this.

Any suggestions or wisdom?
