If the sender isn't burned up, try the fix I've described in the past -- soldering a flexible coiled wire from the float arm to the bracket. I had lots of trouble with old Dodge gas gage senders being intermittent or not working at all until I started doing this. The problem is that the sender depends on the float arm making its ground contact to the truck via the pivot. It's just a steel rod with a loose fit in holes in the steel bracket, and the connection never seems to be reliable. A coiled, flexible wire soldered across the pivot ensures a good ground, but is flexible enough that it doesn't interfere with the movement and won't break from years of flexing.
