Here's my offer to you & anyone on the forum....the orange 49 I just finished has it's original 5.5" small lock ring wheels. I wanted the original rims on the truck so changing them wasn't an option. 7.50's on a PW look like the dog's anus & so that's also not an option.
If you or anyone on this forum would care to borrow the rims & tires....if you can take these rim/tires & put them into any situation on a basically stock Power Wagon that will make one of the small rings crack or break loose....I'll give you the W500 :)
I've bought lots of PW's that have had the small lock ring wheels but every one I've purchased has had 9.00/16's installed on them at some point before me.
It's commonly done...yet I've never seen nor heard of a Budd rim letting go, other than from rust issues.
5.5" or 6.5"....once you fill the tire with air, there's just no way that ring is coming off if properly installed & there's also no way the tire is coming over the smaller ring.
