The chrome does not leach or precipitate out in normal use of SS. When you add electricity and use the SS as an electrode you create HexChrome in the solution. This got me an hour long explanation of exactly how it happens by a very smart chemist 10 years ago, and I just summed it up in 10 words or so.

Stainless tanks do perforate from electrolosys when the proper conditions are present. Acid solutions don't appear to effect most SS alloys near as much as base solutions in electrolosys.

What the hell do I know, I spent the last 7 years trying to build an effective electrolyte solution filter system to minimize the top scum layer on the tank. I almost have it right, thanks to some fool tossing out a pool filter. I have to deliberately rust things so I can have test objects.
