Considering that the average person drives about 25 miles per day or less, that's 120 days or approx. every four to six months.
If you drive 50 miles a day, it would be 60 days or two to three months.
The dirt is indeed suspended in the oil and that oil recirculates back into the motor as filters are not 100% effective. A 100% effective filter would restrict flow and cause other issues.
Those rings wore out because the dirty oil acts like sandpaper......= )
Everyone is free to do as they please, I change my oil every 3,000-4,000 miles or every 6 months if the vehicle is not a daily driver.
No matter how you slice it, or how you play with the math, oil is cheaper than a motor, so why scrimp?
