Recently I sold some fence boards to a local farmer. In the course of the transaction he mentioned the flatbed trailer he had, and the fact that he titles/registers all his trailers in Maine, because the annual cost is about 1/3 of what it here in my state, Maryland. He says that so far after several years he has not had any state troopers here stop him to question him. His trucks and cars are registered here in Maryland.
To get this Maine registration for the trailers he uses a service there that does this for a living, kind of like Broadway title in Alabama (who provides for lost titles for a fee).
I know on the interstate I often see big rig trailers with Maine registration, and figured it was a tax reducing move.
Has anyone else, who doesn't live in Maine, done this...and how did it work? Just curious.
