Have you checked with any of the rural saw mills outside of your area?
From a local country saw mill I got white oak for the truck bed.
I know a lot of ash grows up in N.Y. state. Here in my area ash is rare, but we have an abundance of white oak and other species.
Actually, as war eagle says, cypress is a good choice as it is more weather resistant than most of the other woods...great for a work truck I would think. I have seen it for sale in Lowes?
I have a tree farm so tend to keep up with timber issues.
