As to your exhaust, I got tired of replacing mufflers and went to a set of 2.5" Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers. They are slim, flat on the bottom, and fit right up in the stock location (and driver's side too), and can be flush with the lower frame rail to allow a skid plate to be added to protect them.

The M37 running boards don't get it for wheeling - too fragile for side bumpers.

Can't speak to how it would work with a TBI, but with my Q-Jet I've found that an electric fuel pump, operated by a switch on the dash, to back up the mechanical pump, makes a world of difference in steep and side hill situations.
