You can get decent 2x4s and 2x6s at Lowes and Home Depot in Coeur d'Alene, but they're from the big mills right close by and it's all doug fir or larch (DFIR-L on the stamp). The little mills can't compete with the "stud mills" on price. Around here they never sell that ambiguous coastal species called "HEM-FIR" or "CONST" grade lumber. But once I need something bigger than a 2x, I always go to the local mills. The trouble is if you're building where you have to deal with a big city type building inspector, which I thankfully don't yet, they will only accept surfaced and graded lumber. No matter how obviously beautiful it is, if it's not smooth and it doesn't have that grading stamp on it, you can't use it.
