Interesting. Now I know why all the plastic gas cans are so stupidly designed. They meet all the CARB requirements. They also are guaranteed to leak around where the spout screws in, but I can see that's not on the CARB requirements. They require low permeability through the can material, but if the stupid flimsy plastic spout leaks where it screws onto the stupid flimsy plastic can, there's nothing in the regs about that. I bought a brand new 2 gallon plastic "can" to carry around in my car since the gas gage doesn't read right and I regularly run out of gas. I only put 1 gallon of gas in it, so as to make sure there's plenty of room for the pressure to go and there's no gas sloshing up around the hole. Nevertheless, the car always smells like gas. And yet theoretically, we're not allowed to use WWII-style Jerry cans any more, even though they have a good solid screw-in cap that never leaks.
