The owners manual for my '73 with an NP205 stated to use a non-EP 90W(GL-1, IIRC) or equivalent(SAE 50W motor oil being one). The EP additives found in the oils for hypoid use(differentials) can corrode 'yellow metals', like bronze. That said, many folks have used the same "gear oil" in the transmission and transfer as in the diffs seemingly without troubles, atleast according to what I've read on this site and others.
