All I know is that some of the WWII 3/4 ton ambulances had the rear bodies hacked off in the early 1950's and a tall, walk-in, milk truck style ambulance body was fitted.

Supposedly this was to allow more headroom in the rear patient compartment. I doubt that, though I'll admit you can stand up to carry a stretcher case out, rather than being hunched over. But when was the last time the army spent a lot of money to retrofit a vehicle to increase comfort?

I have not seen the interior of one of these, but I wonder if it was to either add a second row of stretchers or to have more stowage space.

I'd sure like to see a photo of the interior of yours, assumming it is original and complete.

Another point to ponder is that these were probably not tactical trucks, but most likely were used on bases and posts. The reason is, they are quite tall for combat use. If that was not an issue, one would think the M43 would have thus been taller.

Oh, I can tell you that the official model number was S-7-MA-51.
