It's the ethanol in the gas that does the rust propagation damage. Ethanol will rust carbon steel. I had to replace a few injectors in my 1992 car to the tune of $120 each. (I taped a magnet to the fuel filter. Maybe that will hold some of the rust)
Newer cars/trucks are being fitted with stainless steel systems from the filler neck on down the line.

The funny thing is that the EPA released a paper a few years ago stating that the ethanol does nothing to reduce emissions. Betcha Archer Daniels Midland's soft money is keeping that crap in our gas. DUH....
