I had a similar experience with my '74 Ramcharger. I found out that with full time 4WD (I assume that's what you have)and a NP203 you have to put the xfer case in "Hi-Loc" in order to run with one drive shaft. This will split the power 50/50 front to back. If I left the xfer case in "Hi" it tried to send all the power to (what the xfer case thought was) the slipping front wheels.

I ran this way for ~8 months before replacing the front drive shaft without any noticeable damage to the xfer case. Some others on the forum might know more about any bad stuff that might occur. Hope this helps.
