Early PW's (1946-55) had the Spurgear (aka Crashbox) tranny not the M-37. On the early m-37 tranny 1st & reverse were spur geared,2,3 & 4 were helical gears (with syncroed 3 & 4th), these were two completly different trannys. My whine also turned out to be from the rear diff.
