Your chatter is caused by, believe or not, a bad ring & pinnion. I have the after-type or NP420 "spur gear" as called by some people.
My fourth gear whine was eliminated by a new counter shaft (old one well worn);
My third gear chatter was eliminated by a good third member. You would not believe how bad the ring & pinnion gears were unless you saw them yourself. You may want to pull the rear plate and look.
