The PW's used the straight cut gear NP420's until the late 1950's, when they went to the helical gears. Which the M37 used all along. The M37 NP420, both early and late, can use the same bevel gear PTO as the late PW. The early PW NP420 has to use a straight gear PTO.

Now, what is the difference between an early and late M37 NP420 (M37 and M37B1)? I was told that 2nd gear is synchro'd on the late ones, while the early ones had synchro only in 3rd and 4th. Can anyone confirm this? And, is there a way to tell the two apart? You never know what the depot might have swapped in.
