GVW question

My 1959 W100 PowerGiant says it has a GVW of 6000lbs. I believe the GVW is total truck weight plus payload weight. It seems to me the last time I weighed this truck (hauling a load of scrap iron to the recycle yard) the empty weight was around 4700lbs. I want to put a 300 gallon water tank in the bed. Full it would be 2500lbs. Will that be too much for this truck? An old friend says he has hauled 9000lbs (GVW) in his 1970 W200 PW.
