I had that thought too. could also be the optima is showing higher voltage than the regular battery and reg needs adjusting to compensate. I always run 8 volt batteries in any 6 volt rig I have and most the time have to adjust the reg to make up the difference, if I dont it behaves like he is describing with the exception of arcing.
