The J.Deere ran on kerosene or diesel through the carb.
Your thinking the IH TD series tractors and
Power units.
They had carb and plugs on one side IP Injectors on the other. Each Cyl. had a 2nd smaller intake valve. When the comp. lever was in start it closed a butterfly in the intake forcing air through the carb and the small valves. When switched over it locked the start valves closed and the Carb. and ran on diesel.
The heads were prone to cracking.
Cat. just used a pony motor.
