I've read of systems that injected water instead of fuel on every other cycle or some such. Thus it's using the heat of compressing the air and of the heat in the combustion chamber surfaces to flash the water into steam providing a power stroke with no fuel burned on that stroke in that cylinder. It seems to be a method of capturing some of the heat from combustion that would otherwise be lost to the cooling system. Difficulties with such a system are probably myriad at present but perhaps it'll turn into a usable cycle in the future.
