I'm in the process of doing a 4bt cummins conversion into my 61 town wagon. Part of this conversion is installing 4 wheel disc brakes and power steering. I found my original D44 front end to be a large knuckle variety. I managed to find a small knuckle relatively close by and bought it. Decided to clean it up and check it out before installing. First surprise was the universal joint on the passenger side had dropped it's needle bearings into the grease. This scored the inside of the knuckle pretty good, but not beyond use. Lots of time spent sanding and polishing the inside of the housing. Since I was replacing the passenger side, I decided to do the same with the driver's side. That u-joint was intact, but the long part of the axle shaft had a fair amount of rust and pitting. Still nothing that would make it un-useable, just more sanding and polishing that wasn't planned. The ring and pinion look good, no chips or missing teeth. The axle housing on the driver's side has been broken and welded at some point in it's life. That didn't show up until the crud was removed. More sanding. I did manage to paint the bottom half and plan on finishing the upper half this weekend. I hope to have the front end re-installed middle of next week. I guess this is a testament to the inate toughness of this old iron we love to work on.
