...a free brake inspection on a truck where the drums haven't been off since Eisenhower was president. I've detested that place ever since I watched them try to scare a woman friend of mine who had no money into having $400 worth of work (in 1985 dollars, when a basic brake job was $50) done on her Dodge Dart, when all it needed was a set of shoes. The guy told her the hoses were all ready to blow, the drums all needed replacing, etc. and they couldn't let the car out of the shop without fixing it all because they'd be liable when the brakes gave out and she died. Now somebody could say maybe that was all true, but I knew enough to know it wasn't true in that case, and I especially knew enough to see through their BS scare tactics.
