Don't you guys make the same mistake our government made over here in Europe, Belgium.
Diesel engines are more popular over here because of the same economic reasons, of course, but they forgot to impose the manufacturers to provide them with a decent particle filter.
What we got now is so many polluting diesel vehicles in traffic that on some days government has to lay on speed-restrictions because of to many smog/cancer causing particles in the air.
This used to be a phenomenon whe only had in the larger city's and after weeks of sunny wheather, but now it's everytime there's a few sunny days and no wind and all over the country, city or outback, no exceptions.
We already had a speed limit 3 times this year and summer still has to come. Sollution: now the government is planning on subsidising the reconversion of these vehicles/engines so guess who's paying the bill.
Those emission regulations will be a benifit in the long run.
Bare in mind all the cancers these particles can AND WILL cause. It will only hit you in the face when a relative get's it and then there's no turning back the clock.

Dirk
