I've run on straight unleaded regular many times. With 75 cents/gal difference in price, I'm doing it now. The only difference is it's harder to start at sub-freezing temperatures when running on straight gasoline. Same power, same sound, same fuel economy when running. I try to keep 50% diesel or old furnace oil in the mix, but technically it's not necessary. I also burn my used motor oil, gear oil, ATF, rancid cooking oil, etc, but try to keep that below 10%. They'll run fine on straight cooking oil so long as the temperature is warm enough to keep it fluid. Alcohol also works.

There really should be a way to adapt the design to a modern light-truck engine. The only tricks are a special piston top, a special injector nozzle, and the density compensator on the injector pump, which varies the injector timing according to the viscosity of the fuel. The only thing that would add cost is the density compensator, and that could be replaced with a computerized unit that would probably do an even better job. The problem may well be that it can't meet the new smog regs, though I doubt anyone's even tried.
