Sears tries to replace ratchets with rebuilt ratchets, but they gave me a new one after I went up the chain a couple notches telling them that when I bought the set back around 1983, I bought it with a "full lifetime replacement" warranty. Also, the only rebuilt ones they had on had were cheaper models. They also gave me the run-around on a broken tap wrench which the girl claimed wasn't a "hand tool" and so wasn't guaranteed. Again, no arguing with the clerk but just went up the chain till somebody gave me a new tap wrench. Sears just sent me a big fancy tool catalog but it went straight in the trash. If I want a cheap tool with a pretty decent short-term guarantee I'll go to Harbor Freight. If want a good tool with a real guarantee, I'll get a Proto or Snap-on. The big selling point for Sears used to be their lifetime guarantee. There were stories of people who finally broke their grand-dad's Craftman ratchet reefing on it with a cheater bar and Sears would replace it no questions asked. The marketeers running the place today don't seem to realize that you can't buy that kind of good publicity. Instead they'll save a dollar or two on a wrench and in so doing, destroy the only reason why any thinking person would pay a fairly high price for tools of mediocre quality.
