Those trannys have several pressure ports on the out side that will tell you where the pressure is- and isn't. Great for troubleshooting. Easy to understand the inner workings too. But lots of rubber piston rings to rot and crack...
The first one I rebuilt was in my garage at home. 1979 in a '71 1/2t. Did it with a Motor's manual, one picture at a time. Beat the flat rate too. A seal kit is probably still $70, rebuilt today maybe $700? Nothing to lose.
