I don't have my books handy at the momment,
but it seems like the very early 46/48 trucks used a two wire sender. And it was polarity sensitive between the two wires, and bimetal strip that was heated.
Then they went to a one wire gauge w 6v and then on to 12v in late 55 or early 56.
You can not use the earliest gauge with later senders.
You need to figure out what you actually have.
