The one I fixed before was a wound resistor of nichrome wire. It had broken near one end, so I just rewound it a bit looser. Worked good after that. So I'll probably take this one apart too. Nothing to lose there.

My parts book lists only two senders, one with screws and the other with the retainer ring. No electrical difference, 6 or 12v. But about four different gauges. 6 or 12v, plus 6 or 12 with electric temp sender, probably thermo electric rather than magnetic? for use with an IVR (instrument voltage regulator, it makes a pulsing voltage that would drive a magnetic gauge loopy)
