Duplicate messages happen if something goes wrong before your computer tells the mail server that it's received the whole message correctly. That "something" can be a dropped internet connection, the mail program crashing, or some other computer problem. When that happens, the mail server doesn't know that you actually got the message so it'll hang onto it and try to give it to you again the next time you log in. It can happen with any mail reader, but if for some reason your Thunderbird installation was crashing and your Outlook wasn't, that would account for the problem.

I consider this more of a "feature" than a "bug" since if there's any doubt about whether or not the mail got through correctly, I'd rather have the server hold onto it and try again, even if it means I get a duplicate, than assume I got it correctly when maybe I didn't.
