My wife and I just got back from a trip to Panama.
There, diesel is about $3.20 a gallon, with regular gas about $3.30. This makes sense since diesel is easier to refine, etc.
Here in Maryland, diesel is 70 cents higher than regular gas, and pushing $4.00 a gallon.
What is even more upsetting, is that the recent price hikes are primarily due to speculation. American (and Canadian?) consumers have cut back on the usage of fuel since the price hikes last year. So, it is not supply and demand now. And like food, fuel is an essential.
I am a conservative and believe in the capitalist system, but if this continues, the government may have to step in in some way, I am afraid to say. The hikes are already re-igniting inflation.
