The earily 7.3's were tough, simple engines with no turbo on them. Thus, they are "Powerstroke" diesels due to the lack of a turbo. Those were very good engines. They were a little slow to rev up without the turbo, but very strong and dependable. I have seen many with over 300,000 on them and still going strong. I think the first year for the Powerstroke 7.3 was 90 or 91.
The 7.3 Powerstrokws were also good engines. I have owned over a dozen, all with over 225,000 miles when I bought them. They do not have the torque the Cummins has, but once wound up, they pull great.
The engines to avoid are the early 6.0 diesels that Ford started using in 2003. They were a disaster at first. I have been told that if the engine was built AFTER Jan., 2003, it should be ok, as the problems were fixed by then. However, I am not sure I would want a 6.0 at all .
