I spoke extensively today with the owner of the '54 Power Wagon on the cover of Four Wheeler Magazine (Tony Squier) about the build up of his truck.

Below is a link to pictures taken during fabrication. Check them out if you are contemplating a similar swap. They show details not available in the magazine article about how he modified the steering box, firewall, tranny hump, brake master cylinder, transfer case, etc.

He said in the future he might add a some sort of cooler for the transfer case and axles. He's been advised by the "guys from Iowa" that these items were not designed for long 70mph highway cruises. Destructive heat builds up & can't vent. He really was pleased with the drive of the stock suspension with the 37" swampers.

He told me that fitting the 6.1 hemi (vs the 5.7) into the Power Wagon creates additional challenges because the AC and Alternator are mounted low on the block and will likely interfere with the narrowed front PW frame. All the accessories on the hemi are mounted via the 1 piece cast aluminum cover that houses the water pump.

He also said DO YOUR RESEARCH before plunking down big money for a crate hemi. Make sure the engine & computer work with your transmission choice. And get all the parts needed to operate the motor & transmission as a package (CPUs, throttle mechanism, sensors, wiring harness, etc).

Tony was a very nice guy and deserves a thank you for taking 20 minutes out of his very busy work day to discuss the build up of his cool Power Wagon. His business (www.hotwireauto.com) provides custom wiring harnesses to fit the 5.7 & 6.1L hemis into Jeeps and any other hemi-powered hot rods. So thanks Tony!
