Nice overview of the charging system. I believe the generator puts out constant DC power consistant with it's speed and the regulator's points open/closure rate is based on electrical demands. Biggest problem with starters are worn bushings, which causes a greater amount of amps to turn it. Also the one component most overlooked. Symptom - engines turns over slow
