A couple days ago I decided to give my 230 engine some higher revs to try an understand how well my carb/gov/timing settings were behaving; had the carb rebuilt a while back (6 months) and told the the shop "don't touch the governor"... they did. Okay, fine, no problem. Does need adjusting of course.

My engine idles and runs okay (not perfect) but I thought I'd see how she behaved at some higher rpms, nothing dramatic. After racheting-it-up a couple notches and leaving it there, it sounded good and strong. Then....

I was looking right at the voltage gauge when I notice a large spike. All the way to 35+. And back down. I can't really recall where it settled, but I do remember thinking to myself, "that it was odd". I never got any sign that anything was unusual with the engine itself. Ran normal. So, after a while I shut it down.

Now. Dead battery that won't take a charge. At all. Battery seems to be absolutely shot. Hmmm.

Anyone short-out a battery?
