I am looking for any tips that were not published in the 1/2 ton WC military repair manual for reassembling the differential. I did not disassemble the differential carrier (ring gear, spur gears, etc), just removed the major components from the housing.
The reason for disassembling the differential was a broken rear axle. I have never been into the rear since I have owned the truck (19 years), just made sure there was plenty of oil in the housing. I wanted to make sure that nothing else was broken inside the rear. When pulling the pinion seal, I found part of the thrust pad laying along side the pinion shaft. This caused me to pull the differential down for a close inspection. I did mark the position of the differential bearing adjusters, so I could put them back into the proper position. I could find no metal shavings in the housing or signs of broken teeth, worn races, or spalling on the bearings. I have ordered the replacement axle shaft and thrust pad. I am hoping to reassemble the differential imay have to invest in a dial indicator, but don't know if I have sufficient skills to properly set the backlash.
Thanks in advance.
Dave
