I would never use a 1911 for defence purposes without extensive work done. I have a few Colts and would never trust any of my stock 1911s in a emergency situation. I have a Wilson Combat 1911 that has been properly worked and is ready for a IPSC competition.
I would first match and polish the feedramp to the barrel, lower the ejection port, the extractor needs to be adjusted, extended safety added, modified slide catch, switch out to a "square" heavy duty recoil spring, bevel the magazine well, the trigger needs to be worked, different sights...
