The timing of the 230 engine can vary from 2 degrees before TDC to 6 ATDC considering octane and carbon buildup (ping).

Centrifical Advance - These are designed to give maximum performance at all engine speeds. At idle there is no advance but as the engine speeds up the weights used to advance the spark, advance it to acheive maximum effect from fuel/air burn at all engine speeds to full throttle when the advance is at its max. Mainly used on engines that burn lower octane fuel (fast burn rate). Advance is still maintain under full throttle at low speeds.

Combination of Centrifical and Vacuum advance - These are designed for engines that use higher octane fuel (slower burn rate) to advance the spark farther at lower engine speeds by vacuum to acheive the best efficiency of higher octane gas fuel/air burn for more power. Centrifical weights still play their part in advancing the spark timing. No vacumm advance is achieved at full throttle, but that is acheived by centrifical weights in the dist.

So with today octanes, a vacuum advance distributor can increase power and MPG on the 230 engine.
