Anything WWII has taken a big jump in price lately. I don't even know what's "reasonable" any more. The last I checked, the CMP wasn't selling any more M1s either. I was lucky to get one for $500 a couple years ago. Probably not the best one around, but it shoots better than I do, and that's good enough for me. I don't have to fight any wars with it.

Bill Clinton ordered the surplus M14s destroyed, but apparently they didn't get them all, and they're still being used as sniper rifles in Iraq. I wish a few more would get out on the market. It'd be the "correct" rifle for any M37. If the B17 is the powerwagon of airplanes, the M1 Garand is the powerwagon of rifles. Gen. Patton called it "The greatest battle implement ever devised." It's heavy (like a PW), and you want to make every shot count with it, but it just looks and feels right to me, unlike the new plastic fantastic guns. I was lucky to pick up some WWII vintage AP .30-06 at a flea market last fall, so come summer when I can get out to my land, I'm going to see how it compares to the modern 5.56 NATO "SS109 penetrator" at punching holes in scrap iron at long distances. I suspect there will be no comparison.
