You're right about the party bosses trying to control the elections. As "Boss" tweed put it, "I don't care who does the electing so long as I do the nominating". The one mistake our founding fathers made was failing to anticipate the rise of political parties and how they'd take over the elections by taking over the nominations. If we want to clean up our political system the best thing we can do is stop arguing about republican versus democrat or liberal versus conservative, and open up the nominating process to everyone regardless of whether they've paid their party dues and have the blessing of the party bosses. Let's have wide-open primaries for all offices, local, state, and federal, and the top two out of the primary go on to the general election. If the top two happen to both be Republicans, or both be communists, then maybe next time the other parties will run better candidates.
