When I took welding in school, I was taught two things about welding cast iron: 1 - drill a hole at each end of the crack to prevent further cracking, weld it, then if the part permitted, heat it in an oven to 500 degrees for several hours to realign the molecules of the weld/piece and then let it cool with the oven. If it’s a long crack, weld an inch, let cool and repeat till the crack is filled (old school welding).

I’ve welded using both oxygen/propane torch/brazing rod as well as ARC/cast iron rod with plenty of success on exhaust manifolds. Nothing magical about cast iron or cast steel welding and with ARC rods today, you can actually mix/match metals – really good stuff.
