There was a older man near me that just passed away. Not the same man as you mentioned. That would weld cast iron. I saw him do it a few times. I do not if he used a special rod. But he would first heat what he was welding with a torch then make his weld and very quickly bury it in some sand. He told me that the trick to welding cast iron was that the weld could not cool off to fast. That is why he buried in sand. The sand would insulated it and allow it cool down slowly
