Sounds much like a 54 Ford I had as a Kid. It too was 3 on the tree with a OD T handle under the dash. It was all factory. As I remember, if you wanted OD, you pulled the handle and then when up to speed, you let off on the gas and it went into OD. You could floor the go pedal and kick it out of OD.
We taped a toggle switch tot the 3 on a Tree shifter and ran the wires to the OD switch ( dont remember where) The you could wind out in 1st, flip the switch and have 1st OD, then hit the switch and shift to 2nd, wind her out, flip the switch and wind her out in 2nd OD. The same for 3rd gear. It went good, and sounded better with dual glass packs, and we had 6 speeds ha ha ha.
If the Dodge unit is like the Ford, external, after the tranny, it would be a nice add on.
