On the radio the other day I heard some talk-show host talking about this issue, and although I didn't agree with everything he was saying, I at least know where he was coming from...
He said until you hit Americans in the pocketbook and charge $10.00-$12.00/gal, they won't change. The guy that buys the $80,000.00 SUV doesn't really care about $3.00/gal. Very few folks utilize public transportation to it's fullest, and they don't like to car-pool, they want their own car in case they want to leave work early.
