there were other engines that were in competion to cat's 3208 that failed just as bad! take the cummins v8 series we called the 555 or triple nickle it to was a dud. it was a 210 hp unit non turbo. G M had a converted gas to diesil a v6 rated at 195 hp it was no hell either ,mack trucks imported a scandiavian 6 cylinder another poor performer . at that point in time manufactures(ENGINE) were in a big rush to power medium duty trucks with their diesils .trying to follow the sales of diesil, use in heavy duty hiway units in the mid to late 60s .it was not uncommon to still see gas engines on the hiway pulling a trailer .mileage was poor and breakdowns frequent and engine life was about 60000 miles so when the engine manufactures jumped on the band wagon for medium diesils they did it in haste. BUT they early diesil did give 4 miles to the gallon they had to come up with smaller more compact units to bolt in and fit in. those primitive or early v8 engines did give you 100 000 miles and were more reliable than there gas counter parts .so consider those engines too have been a stepping stone to the ones we have to day .also cost was a factor too the deisil manufactures had to come up with a light weight engine deliver same or more horse power and still be cost effective to compete with unit equiped with a gas engine
