Ammeter will be fine as it measures amps and not volts.

I went to my local hardware store and bought O gauge auto battery wire and some terminals with bolt holes and soldered them on. I ran grounding straps from the engine to the frame, frame to the body and from the body to the engine. Obviously I kept the one from the battery to the engine. Having all these grounding straps stopped a lot of arching that I was seeing from the floor pan to the 4 wheel shift levers (at that time I had only the ground between the battery and the engine). It made quite a difference in headlight intensity and heater motor speed also.
